Wouldn’t it be great to have a circle over the phone where we simply get together to journey and support each other on the path of shamanic learning? Let’s do it! Please join us on the second Monday of each month for an 1 to 1.5 hour call were we will commune with friends, journey to the spirits, and celebrate our connection. The call will meet at 6:30 Mountain time. The format will be:
- Open circle by calling in the spirits
- Do a quick introduction and check in around the circle
- Journey on a topic as a group (or if an individual person prefers he/she may use the time for a personal journey)
- Share the journeys we did (for those who choose to share). We may break into smaller groups to do this if the circle is large.
- Close circle
This is a chance to journey in a powerful, supportive circle. The circle of spirits helps keep us focused and gives juice to the experience. Please joins us, and please tell your friends about it!
The calls are on the SECOND MONDAY of each month. We are asking a $5.00 fee per call, however, if that is out of your budget you may join the call for free. (I realize that in hard times some of us are having a trouble scraping together even that little bit of cash!) You will have to pay for the call to the bridge line. Masterclass Descriptions
Carla’s Shamanic Masterclasses offer material not provided in the Animal Spirit Network teleclass series. These areas are important to a well rounded shamanist, and include classical methods for working with the spirits of place, clearing land, self healing, ancestral healing, and more. Master classes also from my own areas of shamanic innovation and exploration.
I practice exploratory shamanism in which I am always developing new work and birthing new ways of working with spirit, based on the direct knowledge they give me. Currently I am developing ways of working with spirals and eco systems. See my blog for my most current research areas.
The classes will have different prerequisite requirements based on the difficulty of the material. This schedule will be updated as I add new classes to the agenda.

Our Power Animals have Tribes with cultures and mythology, just as our human tribes have. We can ask our power animals to heal us using the power of their tribes. Often they will do this through stories, myths that describe the nature of the world. Our concerns mirror the worlds concerns. Our healing is universal healing, and when we bring healing into the world through our Shamanic Work, we bring heal to all of the world not just ourselves and our clients. The Tribal Stories evoke this underlying truth and bring it forward in magic and beauty.
We can gather stories for ourselves, for our families and for all our relations. The stories can be personal or broadly mythic. We can express the myths in different ways. We will tell stories in the class, but we will encourage you to express them through other arts too, such as paintings, crafts, theater and dance.
Harmony Harrison has been gathering Tribal Stories of her Power Animals and has agreed to share this story with you as an example of what is possible to retrieve.
Harmony writes, “Bringing back these myths can be a service to the animal tribes. It is not just we who are benefiting, but an exchange. That’s why it’s so important for us to express the stories after we witness them. Expressing the stories is a gift we give back to the spirits, as well as to our own people & animals. Because the spirits experience such joy in the sharing, and because their incarnate tribal members benefit from the humans’ changing views of them.”

Our skills really don’t matter – even someone with rudimentary literacy will bring back beauty in concept and word. It is the spirits’ story we are retrieving. In this class you will access your core creative soul and let it sing the songs the spirits give you. Your heart will spread as wide as the eagle’s wings. You will create beauty and shine in the spirits light. You will be healed and you will gain amazing insight.

Guiding Others in Non-Ordinary Reality
We will learn how to guide others on a shamanic journey. By doing this you greatly enhance your skills in interpreting and relaying your journey as you experience it. This technique is very helpful in getting your “mind chatter” out of the way, and helping you have a deep experience. And at the same time, you will be learning to help others into NOR, without having to teach them to journey. It is a two for one!
You will learn the Rattle Journey, where you intimately guide a partner and learn to recite your travels. We will also discuss giving other people customized “mediations” to help them journey when they don’t know how. This is a very cool way to give people a personalized way to ask for healing and advice for themselves and their animal.
The fee is $55 and the class lasts 2 hours. Upon registration you will receive a handout and call information. This class does not have ASN credit.

I can’t teach them in teleclasses, and I can’t perform them on people and animals who are not in front of me. In my other live workshops I touch upon them, but this is the first workshop devoted to hands-on healing techniques, taught in a step-by-step manner. This workshop is fresh and exciting, and teaches techniques (for both animals and people) that give immediate and profound results. I hope you can join us. Learn to bring spirit through your bones to deliver powerful hands on healing. You will learn stand alone shamanic techniques, and you will learn how to use your shamanic skills to enhance other energetic healing modalities. Sessions for People
Shamanism can offer immediate help to those suffering pain from abuse, trauma or injury. It can restore your sense of power, giving you renewed strength in your daily life. It addresses the spiritual components of illness making other forms of treatment more effective (and sometimes performing miracle healings). I can retrieve your own helping spirits who can give you wisdom and a sense of comfort and well being. Shamanic work speeds physical and emotional recovery, making your days brighter fast.
I perform shamanic healings of all sorts for people, including soul retrieval, power animal retrievals and distance healings. If you live near Glendale, Arizona you can work with me live at my home. If that is impossible I will perform distance healing for you. We need to schedule a time, and I request that you participate in the healing by being present, and quietly opening your heart to healing power when I journey. We will talk on the phone immediately before and after the session, and if you like, you can listen to journey over the phone as well.
When you contact me, tell me what the problems are that you would like to overcome. Maybe it is a sense of emptiness, a physical pain, and emotional hurt, loss of childhood memory, or grief. If you want a particular treatment, such as soul retrieval, request it.
- I will first discuss with you what you wish to have shift in your life – physical, emotional and spiritual. You may have specific requests, such as for soul retrieval or physical healing, and I will focus on those things. But I will also ask the spirits to do a wide range of healing work for you, including diagnostics of the spiritual aspects of your situation, illness extraction and power retrieval work. The spirits know what is best for you and help you accordingly. I will record the journey on a CD, capturing the messages my spirits give for you to hear. If you are on the phone, you will hear the details as they unfold as well.
- After the journey I will explain what transpired and answer questions. I will also give you follow up exercises to make sure the power “sticks”. This may include doing brief meditations daily, checking inside yourself to feel the spirits I retrieved and asking them for help and wisdom. Or it may include a “prescription” from the spirits, such as getting more sleep, improving your diet, visualizing healing in your body or whatever. (Please – think of shamanic work as a complement to modern medicine, not as a substitute.)
- With the CD I usually include a power object empowered by the spirits to help you heal.

What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is the most ancient form of healing, practiced by humans world wide.
Through a change in consciousness, Shamans enter “non ordinary” reality to request healing and advice from compassionate animals, humans and other spirits. Spiritual healing is complementary to modern medicine, therapy and training. Often it is the missing link, the wind in the sails that allows healing, recovery and training to rapidly progress.
I practice core shamanism, a distillation of shamanic practices which are common to many diverse cultures. The methods of core shamanism are practiced by modern shamanic healers throughout the world. In core shamanism, the shaman enters a shamanic state of consciousness through listening to rhythmic percussion. He or she then journeys to the world of spirits and connects with spirit allies for healing work. These spirits are available to help everyone, and the shaman’s role is often to reconnect clients with their helping spirits, restoring their personal power. The best way to learn more about shamanic work is to learn to journey yourself! What is Shamanic Animal Communication and how does is differ from telepathic animal communication?

Shamanism is the ancient practice of healing wherein the shaman goes into a trance like state and communicates with spirits. The reasons they do this are to get information and knowledge, and to request healings for other beings (and sometimes for themselves)
Medicine people are shamans. The term comes from the Tuval language from Siberia, but is used to describe medicine people who work in this way across the globe. All indigenous people use shamanistic practices for their healing work, and most “folk” cultures do as well.
Entering the trance-like “shamanic state of consciousness” is not hard to do, but typically involves some training. In shamanic animal communication we first enter the shamanic state of consciousness, we then connect with a personal helping spirit who loves us and who wishes to help us help animal. Then we connect with the animal with whom we wish to communicate. When we are in the shamanic state of consciousness we enter a world we call “non-ordinary reality”. In many ways is it like moving around on earth in ordinary reality, but it more dream like. When we are there our “connected self” is able to move about and reach out to the “connected selves” of other beings. I use these terms because they best describe the phenomena of this experience. You can experience this for yourself in one of my workshops.
The core difference between telepathic animal communication and shamanic communication is that in shamanic communication you always work with the help of a compassionate spirit. This spirit guides you quickly and surely to the client animal, he can diagnose the situation and give clear and helpful advice, he facilitates the communication session by interpreting confusing information when necessary, and most important, he can do direct and miraculous healing for the animals and the people involved.
Those people who have experience doing telepathic communication find working shamanically with the helping spirits to be richer and more beneficial for the clients. And those who are just learning find it very easy to connect with the animal using this method.
Shamanic Healing Techniques

Some frequently used shamanic healing methods are soul retrieval, power animal retrieval, extraction, spiritual healing, and psychopomp (escorting “dead” spirits to the other world). Over the years the spirits have also shown me a deep clearing and healing methodology I call Spiral Healing. The spirits use Spiral Healing to clear deeply entrenched emotional and physical issues in people and animals.
Soul Retrieval
Shamans believe that when a person suffers from a physical or psychological trauma a part(s) of the soul splits off and no longer contributes to the person’s whole being. Instead it stays fixed in the event, but in non ordinary reality. This dissociation is called soul loss, and it often results in loss of memory, or a feeling of incompleteness. This disengagement makes it easier to survive traumas such as accidents, abuse, or emotional disturbances. Children can suffer soul loss from events that are traumatic to them, but may seem trivial to adults. Soul loss can also occur when another person “holds” onto a part of us, and doesn’t let go. (An old lover perhaps.)
Once the traumatic event is over complete healing can occur when the soul part(s) that is missing is returned. The shaman facilitates this event by journeying into non ordinary reality and, with the help of spirit allies, finding the missing soul parts and bringing them back home. Then there is a period of integration, where the client gets to know the returned soul part(s) again, and together they work to heal the old wounds. This often takes several months.
The concept is the same for animals as it is for people with a few exceptions. Carla has achieved beneficial results doing soul retrievals for horses, dogs and cats.
Power Animal Retrieval

All people and animals can enjoy the power, strength and comfort of an alliance with a spiritual power animal. The spirits of wild animals work with shamans, guiding them through their journeys, giving advice and performing healings. Often the first thing a modern shamanic healer does for a client is retrieve a power animal for them. The person then bonds with the animal by honoring it in ordinary reality, visiting it during quiet meditation, and dancing in a way that lets the animal move through his or her limbs. Domestic animals also benefit from power animal retrieval.
Illness Extraction
Often illness has a spiritual component as well as a physical component. When people and animals are vulnerable and disempowered it is possible for entities that don’t belong to enter our bodies. These misplaced entities can cause persistent sickness, soreness and other undesirable things. As a shaman one of my key functions is to work with my spirits to extract these misplaced entities and deliver them to a neutral place, where they can contribute to the overall good of things (instead of causing harm). This process is called extraction, and it is a very common healing activity in my work. The results are immediate and powerful. After an extraction we always fill the space with positive healing power of some kind.
Spiritual Prescription
These are the instructions that my spirits give to further the healing. They often involve giving herbs, essences, diet changes and touch therapy. So far the spirits have been completely right in their prescriptions. I’ve been given prescriptions for poultices, massage, aroma therapy, herbs, exercise and many other things. I work with various healing spirits to obtain this information. As I am not an herbalist or expert in most of these areas I always recommend that the person investigate the recommended treatment and confirm it with an educated ordinary-reality source. Many times the information I get is new information to me, so I learn as much as the client!
Imparting Spiritual Energy and Power
This has many forms. My spirit allies may touch the animal and impart healing power. This can be similar to “energy” healing. I may be instructed to impart the power of an element, plant, light, crystal and/or other powerful things into the animal. We also may chant over the animal. It is completely individual.

At 5:00 PM we left Key West and headed back to Parmer’s, our boring hotel in Little Torch Key for our final night of four. The next day was the treat of all! Dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key. What to say that has not been said before!
We signed up for a Dolphin Encounter, where we interacted with a mother, Marena and her yearling calf Kyle. They did all the tricks with us, including Marena towing us around the pool hanging onto her dorsal fin. What a complete blast! These dolphins are caring gentle and love to play. Matt is really the one to tell how it changed him.
Matt approaches understanding his encounter from the evolution based frame of mind. “First off, just coming into such close contact with another earthly life form that is so intelligent, more so than other domesticated animals. And you just can’t help but think that these beings didn’t follow the same chain of evolution as us, because they are as intelligent as us, how can this be unless it is a parallel path to us?” Matt went on to share his amazement at how the dolphins teach each other the behaviors, and how closely knit they are when doing group tricks like leaping and spinning. Most of all I was taken by how curious the dolphins are about people, just as we are about them. They just sat and watched us, just as we do them. We appreciate each other as equals.
I was taken by how much they delight in our delight, in delight itself. My horses are clicker trained, and I have seen the reciprocal joy first hand, but not to the extent that I felt it here. These sweethearts want nothing more than for all of us to be in love and in joy. I believe it is a reflection of two things: the Dolphin Research Center is positive and honoring, and the dolphins themselves are powered by native joy. A crappy place could probably diminish this passion in them. Certainly dolphins are indeed wild animals with their own ways. I have known divers who were beaten up by wild dolphins. Maybe this was just the dolphins not realizing the diver was a fragile playmate. Maybe it was the dolphin expressing territorial rights. Or maybe the dolphin mirrored the diver’s attitude.
My communication with these dolphins was straight forward. “Who is your favorite trainer?” A thin blond woman (There were two of them, but Matt thinks it was Jessica, who was very enthusiastic and sweet.) “Tell me about what makes you happy?” Getting a spin perfect, sliding on a slick surface (like a seal), sex, the quietness of night, a low whistle that one of the trainers gives when he comes out alone and gives back rubs, helping small kids who are “special needs”. This came from a large dolphin named Delphi.
In Bonaire this February I spent a morning interacting with a wild pod. They told me where they would be and when, and I went to greet them, and was always just a little bit late. Finally I was able to see them, swim out to them and be with the trailing members of the pod, a mom and her calf, as they dove beneath me. Nothing even close to touching distance. The Dolphin Research Center discourages all interaction with wild dolphins because it causes dolphins to loose their wariness of people. They cited cases where moms teach the babies to approach boats for food hand outs (the center implied that this was in replacement to teaching them to fish) and that the offered feed wasn’t the correct food for them. The more serious concern to me was that the dolphins would then be unafraid of the wrong people – people who would molest them by plugging their air holes, and worse. This is a concern that I must ponder as I head for Hawaii in August, with the hope of connection with spinner dolphins.

Today I returned to Bari’s Reef, and this time I entered the water at 4:30. At 4:35 I was over the sand, and at 4:36 I was dancing with an Eagle Ray, then two. They were grazing together and they didn’t mind me one bit.
I spent 50 minutes swimming with the pair today. I got so close that I could see the smallest color patterns, even on their super thin tails. They were not put off in anyway, not in the least bit shy. I was close enough to touch them, but I didn’t attempt it. It just seemed incorrect to try. I have petted shanks and sting rays before. They didn’t seem to mind. I’ll have to journey to the Rays and ask them how they would like it.
Yesterday I did several sessions before starting my diving day. One was for a dog in Holland, and Spotted Eagle Ray came as a healing spirit. There are times when I want something so much that I figure I must be creating it. I thought that I had succumb to ego and was forcing the journey, but the Ray assured me I was not. And then to prove the point, the spirits started my next journey by merging me with an ostrich embryo who was trying to hatch. It was so vivid and bizarre. I was struggling to peck the shell, and felt exhausted and wanted to give up. Then I felt a surge of power in my abdomen, and I gave it one more hard peck and POP! I saw sunlight. I felt air, and my mom was there in all her glory. My siblings were chirping and I had all of life before me. How glorious! Clearly I didn’t create that – I didn’t have the foggiest idea how it connected to the client, and no sense that it was important to me. But maybe it was. Maybe I am hatching a new way of working by connecting with these reef animals.
When I was done with my clients’ journeys yesterday, I journeyed to the Eagle Rays to ask if there were anything I should be aware of when I was swimming with them. The Ray I was talking with said he preferred if I didn’t chase him. He said that it reminded him just a bit of a shark, and sharks are bad (the predator), and that he also didn’t want me to touch his tail. So I tried my best to stay along side. Once I got in front while the Ray was involved in digging, and that was a mistake. I must have startled him, as his eyes are all covered in sand when he is snouting through the bottom finding crabs. I apologized and we were fine.
I took my Reefmaster camera today, and it failed. It seemed to be taking pictures just fine, but not one recorded on the memory card. This is the third replacement camera Reefmaster has sent me in one year. As a side note, I do not recommend Reefmaster. Sniff! The pictures were so promising. I can’t replace the camera here on Bonaire. You will just have to journey to the animals to see them for yourselves. I did find some good footage on line though. Shamanism is as old as mankind. It is a way of walking, hearing, seeing and being that connects us to the world beneath the world, the spirit that is inside, outside, enmeshed in and parallel to the ordinary world we perceive every day.
We begin a shamanic path by studying the ancient pathways that connect the worlds and teach us to work with spirit. Thanks to Micheal Harner and the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, these old worn paths, overgrown by modern culture, are being steadily cleared. Every day they grow more visible to us and are now fairly easy to follow.
Modern shamanic teachers take people first along the wide and clearly marked paths to teach them to journey. Think of the first few miles of a major trail right after the tail head. It is like a super highway and is populated by people of all types. Further into the forest the trails diverge and become less traveled, more rugged, and more adventuresome. Today’s shamanic teachers have cleared these paths for you into the specific areas of their interest: Celtic Shamanism, Shape Shifting, White Table, Animal Healing, Soul Retrieval, and so many more fascinating arenas.
I have opened paths that are about healing our Animal Partners (dogs, cats, horses etc) using shamanic methods. In my trainings I apply common shamanic techniques to animal clients. But I do so in a way that is unique to the trails I have uncovered. Over the course of 10 years of concentrated journey work and attention I have been taught a way of working shamanically that is very powerful, and is especially beneficial for working with animals and their people. I teach this method through telelclasses with the Animal Spirit Network, and through workshops worldwide and private trainings.
I am not sure exactly what cultural traditions I am following when I do my work. I am not much of a scholar. I am an explorer. I ask the spirits to show me how to achieve big results. I ask them to explain the cosmology of the world to me empirically: through shamanic journey experiences, results in my clients, and parallel experiences in my students. The results are profound for me and for my students. (By the way I enjoy taking workshops and connecting with other shamanic teachers. It is so exciting to learn the paths they have been shown, and to see if and how they overlap with the ones I am following.)
Here are the themes of the shamanic exploration I am embarking on today:
Spirals and the Nexus of Creation: At the center of the spiral is a place of brilliance. The place of creation itself. A client in that spiral can experience a transfiguration that explodes away the old and rebirths in pure divinity. The secret is in the preparation and the ceremony. I have two workshops that explore this : Healing in the Spiral of Time and Sacred Animal Masks. Sacred Animal Masks is offered in Phoenix and Chicago Spring 2008.
The Power of Ecosystems: This started with my desire to communicate with reef life (all the critters, not just whales and dolphins). Communicating with reef life opened up a new revelation for me in the power of using ecosystems as healers for clients and for the earth herself. As a result I see the earth totally differently today than I did even a year ago. I am currently exploring ecosystem work with my advanced private students. I will be birthing it in a week long workshop on private Caribbean sailing boat cruise in 2009. (Yes, we will swim with Dophins!)
Animal Tribes: Domestic Animals are very dependent upon their connection to their spirit tribes. The spirits tribes facilitate the death and dying process. They bring super powerful healing power. They give the animal a point of reference in the world. They hold any soul parts that were not fully committed to the body at birth. The tribal stories are the animal’s mythology, critical to the animal’s self concept. I am forever exploring these tribal connections and teaching about them in my trainings. There is more to this story too (there always is). Our power is a function of our connection to our tribes. Our tribes are our loved ones here on earth, our ancestors, spirit family, power animals and their tribes. We will be connecting to our Power Animal’s tribe in the Mask workshop – see the page links!
